“Do you think we should let Emma and fang boy go into another room and work out their differences? Or let her punch him before we get started?” Archie turned to Emma. “What do you think, doll-face? Do you want to take a few whacks at him?”

“Archie, you shouldn’t encourage violence,” Ami told him with a frown.

“That goddess you worship? Little-known fact. She’s the goddess of two by fours to the head when people are stupid.” Archie thrust his head out and stared at Rex with large eyes. “And if ignorance is bliss, you must be the happiest person on the planet right now.”

“I’m standing right here, and I can hear you,” Rex muttered with a glare at the bird. “You may have forgotten that.”

“Why would I bother to insult you if you couldn’t hear me?” The owl jumped to the center of the kitchen table, and my mother winced as his sharp talons scratched the wood. “I know you can hear me, fang-face.”

“Am I the only one here that can’t hear the owl?” Emma asked, looking around at my sisters, my mother, my aunt, and her brother. “You can all hear him and understand what he’s saying?” We all murmured affirmatively. “Jeesh. Talk about being the odd one out.” The detective glanced across the table at her brother and then dropped her eyes.

“Now that we are all here.” Mom smiled and took her place at the head of the table. “According to Ami, the goddess has decided Astra must protect two beings and not just one,” my mother announced (as if we all weren’t aware of that already). “While this is unexpected, I’m sure it’s because our family has done such an incredible job assisting Astra with her divine mission.”

“Sure,” I responded with a shrug. “It couldn’t possibly be because I’m totally capable of keeping two people alive.”

My mother’s proud face fell.

“Astra, your mother is not saying anything about your capability.” My aunt gave me a stern look, her eyes containing several warnings she didn’t need to verbalize. “Emma’s case looked quite simple in the beginning. A stolen painting, nothing more. But now?” She clicked her tongue. “Amadeus Bozeman in Forkbridge would’ve been cause for concern even if the Star card hadn’t flipped over.”

“Twice,” Ami added as if we’d forgotten.

My mother nodded in agreement. “His presence here concerns us all.” Mom leaned forward in her chair and nodded toward the vampire.

“Bozeman contacted me about a month and a half ago,” Rex said quietly, his eyes fixed on me. “He told me that a woman I’ve known quite well over the last year had been killed by Astra. He also related that Val—the woman killed—wanted me to have her possessions, but her money was held in Paranormopolis. This, as you know, makes those assets difficult to use in the human world. Bozeman said she had an agency in Forkbridge that could process the money.”

Emma gaped at her brother. “Process? You mean launder. They have to launder the money.”

I looked at Emma.
